Two tutors to guide you through the day

Description:

The course will be delivered by Lynn Comley and supported by Liz Riley.

You will spend the day in the magnificent Scampston Hall conservatory in the award-winning walled garden. The workshop will give participants the skills and techniques to be able to create a unique piece of felt textile art.

Step by step we will work through the process for wet felting. You will be guided through choosing colours and textures and then the wet felting process to create the picture. Starting with the chosen design, laying out of the ‘dry’ wool fibres, adding accent fibres such as silk to create interest, then the ‘wet’ process of adding water, soap and friction to create a unique piece of fabric.

Felt is surprisingly strong, a lovely medium to stitch into, no two pieces will ever be the same, this should be embraced, this is the time to show your creativity, as the design can be adapted to add your personal mark.

We will look at ways of embellishing the design with hand stitch.  As felt can take a few days to completely dry, we will use sample pieces of felt. We will cover various ways you can embellish your design and the methods I use in my own felt pictures.

We will cover basic stitches that will complement your design, drawing first on paper then showing methods for transferring that design onto the felt.

A pack of embroidery threads to compliment your chosen design will be yours to take and finish at home.

You do not need any prior experience and you will be provided with all the necessary materials and equipment to use on the day.

Lunch break will be 30 minutes, to maximise the amount of teaching time. There will be time to look at the gardens after the workshop which close at 5pm.

Tutors:

Lynn Comley is a contemporary felt maker perhaps best known as UpandDownDale in the felt making world; creating wet felted textile art, embellished with free motion machine embroidery, hand stitch or both! Within her work she uses a combination of natural materials that include wool, silk and linen.

Living by the sea and surrounded by the North York Moors National Park, Lynn's artistic focus is on the natural minutia of her surroundings. She enjoys engaging with the delicate patterns and intricacies of nature, focusing more recently on moss, lichen and limpets but frequently returns to her original inspiration of landscapes, seascapes and hedgerow flora. Her work sells internationally.

Liz Riley will be supporting us throughout the day. Liz is an artisan felt maker with a love of colour and texture. Focusing on traditional feltmaking techniques, her work combines art with a love for making wearable useable items, embracing the dexterity of working with fibre she finds transforming a sheep’s fleece into fabric endlessly fascinating.

With a love for making, her inspiration and motivation is defined by strong colour combinations and colour blends using hand dyed wool, silks and hand spun yarns adding fine detail her work is characteristic of artisan felted work.
